The Introductory Program consists of the lessons which focus on the fundamentals of musical development. The lesson format is designed to help the student determine interest and ability as well as prepare for further Flute programs.

The Introductory Program consists of:

• student practice guide

• flute care and maintenance

• correct body posture, hands, fingers and flute positioning

• tuning the flute

• correct breathing – exercises

• correct tone development – exercises

• flute technique – finger exercises

• basic music notation and reading

• tone range C1 – C3

• role of the tongue

• shaping the sound

• basic improvisation

The Intermediate Program guides the advanced beginner through a series of lessons which begin to examine the instrument in depth. The program focuses on a deeper understanding and application of theory, technique and music notation in manageable and practical situations. The objective of this program is to improve overall musicianship and playing skills, as well as prepare students for the Advanced Flute Player Program.

• music theory

• music reading and notation

• tone range C1- C4

• various articulations, ornaments, dynamics, agogics

• developing the speed of playing

• double and triple tonguing exercises

• exercises for sound, articulations, technique

• chromatics

• improvisation

• further development of already adopted technical and musical elements

The Advanced Flute Player Program has a main objective of supplying the musician with the skills and creative confidence to work in a wide variety of playing situations at a semi-professional level. An extensive coverage of Harmony, Theory and Ear training, will allow the student to become fully absorbed in the art. The intermediate to advanced musician with a desire to improve musicianship and playing skills will become well rounded in all important areas.

The Advanced Flute Player Program consist of:

• exercises for sound, articulation, technique, advanced techniques (harmonics, multiphonics, aeolian sounds, flutter tongue, tremolo, singing and playing)

• chromatic and whole-tone scale

• improvisation

• further development of already adopted technical and musical elements

• harmony and theory (provides a firm understanding of scales, chords and basic harmony)
